The 2020 Legislative Session is a “short” session of only 30 days and it may be over or nearly so when you receive this. During short sessions, only issues that deal with budget or issues of importance to the Governor are allowed to be considered. This limits the legislation and topics.
I love having people from Las Cruces and my district visit me in Santa Fe. I host numerous student groups, NMSU students, and others and it helps me remember how important your issues and concerns are.
As chairman of the Senate Education Committee, I am part of the Senate leadership team. Big education issues include teach raises, school budgets, early childhood education, and access to college. We are also working on legislation to increase both the number of teachers in New Mexico but also the diversity among them. While it is too early to tell what might get approved at the time of writing this, I am confident we will continue to improve the resources and policies that help our children succeed and prosper.
A major issue I am working on is support of the Anna Age Eight Institute and its support for the Resilience Leaders started in Las Cruces by Mayor Pro-Tem, Kasandra Gandara. This program provides support to communities working to ensure children have access to vital services and supports necessary for development. Las Cruces and New Mexico are leading the nation in this transformative work.
Issues that affect you are important to me and I encourage you to keep in touch both through the end of the session and after. My Santa Fe office is (505) 986-4834. My cell is (575) 640-0409. My email is bill.soules@nmlegis.gov. I post regularly on Twitter @SenatorSoules and on Facebook at Bill Soules.
It is truly an honor to serve you as your State Senator for District 37, the beautiful Organ Mountain area of New Mexico.
